Landscaper (Full-time)

Pay: $17.00 per hour

Job Summary:


The Landscaper is responsible for the care and maintenance of approximately 22 acres of campus grounds, as well as the upkeep of three offsite cemeteries managed by the organization. This role works closely with the Head Landscaper to ensure all outdoor spaces remain safe, attractive, and respectful. The ideal candidate is reliable, proactive, and comfortable performing a wide variety of outdoor tasks in all seasons.

During the off season, the Landscaper may support the Building Services team with flexible, as needed assignments based on campus needs and the employee’s skills.

Primary Responsibilities


Campus Grounds (22 Acres)

  • Perform daily groundskeeping across lawns, gardens, pathways, athletic areas, drainage areas, and wooded sections of the property.
  • Mow, trim, edge, and maintain turf areas using push mowers, riding mowers, and other power equipment.
  • Mulch, weed, plant, and maintain garden beds and landscaped areas.
  • Prune shrubs, trees, and ornamental plants for safety, health, and appearance.
  • Monitor plant health; identify issues such as pests, disease, or irrigation problems.
  • Assist with seasonal tasks including:
    • Leaf removal
    • Storm debris cleanup
    • Seasonal planting
    • Prep for heat/cold conditions
  • Maintain and clear outdoor pathways, sidewalks, and common areas to ensure safety.
  • Safely operate and maintain landscaping tools and machinery (string trimmers, blowers, hedge trimmers, mowers, etc.).
  • Perform routine checks and minor adjustments on landscaping equipment.

Off-Site Cemeteries (Three Locations)

  • Maintain cemetery grounds with emphasis on cleanliness, respect, and detail.
  • Mow and trim around headstones, memorial markers, and perimeter fencing.
  • Ensure grounds remain free of debris, hazards, or overgrowth.
  • Perform seasonal cleanup and preparation (e.g., winterizing, storm cleanup).
  • Report any vandalism, unsafe conditions, or maintenance needs to the Head Landscaper.
  • Support special preparations for holidays or community observances if required.

Collaboration with Head Landscaper

  • Follow daily and weekly tasking set by the Head Landscaper.
  • Assist with larger projects, including planting renovations, drainage improvements, and property enhancements.
  • Communicate progress, concerns, and supply or equipment needs.
  • Help maintain an organized and well-stocked landscaping shop/storage area.

Flexible Off-Season Responsibilities (As Needed)

During slower landscaping months, the employee may support Building Services by assisting with:

  • Light general maintenance
  • Event setup and breakdown
  • Moving equipment or furniture
  • Minor repair tasks within skill level
  • Snow preparation or sidewalk clearing (if applicable)
  • Other reasonable duties that support smooth campus operations

Off-season work is flexible and will be assigned according to staffing needs, weather conditions, and the employee’s abilities.

Qualifications:

  • Prior landscaping, groundskeeping, or outdoor maintenance experience preferred.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, small engines, and landscaping machinery.
  • Strong attention to detail, especially in cemetery settings.
  • Reliable, self-motivated, and comfortable working outdoors year-round.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining communication with the Head Landscaper.
  • Valid driver’s license (preferred, especially for off-site travel).
  • Understanding of basic plant care, turf management, and safe equipment operation.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, and varying weather conditions; standing, walking, bending, and lifting for extended periods; lift, carry, and move up to 50 lbs.; operating equipment and performing repetitive physical tasks.
