Shaping the Sound of Broadway: The Influence of Jewish Composers on American Theater

Join Virginia Stage Company & Arts and Ideas at the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater for a community conversation as we explore the rich legacy of Jewish composers who revolutionized American musical theater and helped shape Broadway as we know it today.

From the early 20th century to the golden age of Broadway, Jewish composers like George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Leonard Bernstein, and Stephen Sondheim brought their unique musical heritage and creativity to the stage, crafting timeless scores that still resonate with audiences worldwide.

Following a matinee performance of the musical “Little Shop of Horrors,” Rabbi Michael Panitz will join VSC for a talkback celebrating the impact of these visionary artists who blended traditional Jewish music with American popular styles to create some of the most iconic shows in history. From Porgy and Bess to West Side Story and Fiddler on the Roof, their works not only entertained millions but also challenged societal norms, advancing both the art form and cultural conversations.

Whether you're a Broadway aficionado or new to the world of musical theater, this event is an opportunity to discover how Jewish culture, history, and resilience have left an indelible mark on the Broadway stage. Don't miss this special evening dedicated to the music and stories behind the songs that continue to inspire generations.
